Welcome to Skagway!

(it’s actually a cute town, this is just the view from our balcony)
As we were getting ready for our day, I broke our toilet.
I flushed it and it just kept flushing and flushing and flushing…
Fortunately, there was already a maintenance guy in our hallway and I overheard something about the whole section being down, so I don’t think I actually broke it, but still…

a very good day to be off the ship!

Later today, we’ll be riding this train:

But we’ve got a bit of time before boarding our bus, so I wandered into town for a bit and found this old train and a snow clearer:

Back in the day, advertisements were painted on the mountain:

and the tradition is kinda just continued.
Yukon Expedition & White Pass Rail
We started this excursion on a bus, driving our way up through the mountains:

and into Canada:

Crossing the boarder was pretty low-key: our bus driver gave the officer a list of everyone on board, we held our passports up to our face and he gave everyone a cursory glace before sending us on our way.

There were a lot of beautiful pull offs along the side of the road, but our bus skipped most of them (despite other busses utilizing them)

Lame.

The downside of taking a group tour

I liked the colors in this mountain:

We did get to stop at one outlook along the way:

Our first scheduled stop, Carcross:

Back in the day, there were numerous tiny towns all named Caribou Crossing; to set themselves apart, this town shortened their name to Carcross.

Bridge over what I assumed was a river, but is actually Nares Lake:

Typical tiny tourist town:

Scenic with lots of gift shops 🙂

Lunch is our next stop, but we couldn’t resist trying this cashew sourdough cookie:

Did you know there’s a desert in the Yukon!?

Because I most certainly did not!

Wild Adventure Yukon, our next stop:

I appreciated the .com they added on:

BBQ chicken lunch:

with entertainment!

I do love a good sign picture:

This is about the actual size of mosquitos up here:

Awkward hugs!

I’m a moose!:

Our driver told us at the beginning of our trip if we were good noodles that we could go visit a green lake- something about that phrasing tickled both of us. I wanna be a good noodle!

There was one bad noodle at our first stop and he was properly shamed; this time everyone was back at the bus on time, so we got to see the cool lake!

It was actually green!
Then, we were back on the bus and making our way toward the train that’ll take us back to Skagway

Fortunately, we’ve got a little bit of a drive because the scenery here was gorgeous!

and now it’s on my side of the bus!

This lake was strange- half melted, half frozen, but the melted parts were so random:

Our train!

We lucked out and were the last car, which means I’ll be able to get some fun shots out the back:

I chose the seat in the back, closest to the heater 🙂

The views begin!

Some of the melted pools were seriously blue!

Back in the US:

Our train was so long, it was hard to get a shot of the engine:

This old bridge was decommissioned in the 60s when trains started getting heavier- the wooden part was knocked down but the steel structure still stands:

The viewing platform was much smaller and there were a few hogs out there:

but one guy was on a previous tour with us and appreciated that I kept pointing out critters, so he let me in 🙂

Trees started greening up as we descended from the mountains:

After a short wait on our train while an immigration officer walked through and checked passports, we were free to explore town for a bit:

The old and the new:

Tiny town with our boat at the end of the road:

Back to our boat:

Fortunately, our toilet was working when we got back 🙂

Farewell, Skagway!
